Eric Ennion was born in 1900 and spent his childhood in Burwell, on the edge of the Cambridgeshire fens, where he developed a passionate interest in birds and other wildlife.

He followed his father into medical practise, but gave up medicine at the end of the war and became the first warden of the pioneer Field Study Centre at Flatford Mill in Suffolk. During the 1950s he and his wife Dorothy ran their own Bird Observatory and Field Centre at Monks House in Northumberland.

Eric Ennion first exhibited his work in London in 1937 and went on to develop a highly individual style which influenced many younger artists.

“Birds have been my quest for as long as I can remember. Most of our British residents I have watched and sketched in one place or another; the migrants I have wished to follow to their destination.”
